We’re here to tell you everything we know about the game so far, including gameplay details and a release window for the game.
Sonic Frontiers Release Date
As far as a release date for Sonic Frontiers goes, all we have is Holiday 2022. The game may be delayed to facilitate extra work on the title and avoid the fabled Sonic curse, however.
It’ll be the second Sonic game to release this year after Sonic Origins which actually creates an interesting parallel with the release of Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces, a 2D and 3D Sonic game releasing in the same year.
The game is currently aiming to release on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam. Unlike the previous Sonic game, Sonic Origins, Sonic Frontiers will receive a full physical release.
UPDATE: Steam’s backend has updated the release date of Sonic Frontiers from a generic 1st September release to 8th November according to SteamDB. The change was made on the 19th July. A backend listing on the PlayStation Store also listed the date as being in November, albeit as November 15th instead of November 8th. This means that it’s extremely likely the game launches in November.
Sonic Frontiers Gameplay & Details
The official website for Sonic Frontiers describes the game as:
“An experience like never before, accelerate to new heights and experience the thrill of high-velocity open-zone freedom. Battle powerful enemies as you speed through the Starfall Islands- landscapes brimming with dense forests, overflowing waterfalls, sizzling deserts, and more!”
We’ve seen gameplay footage for the game thanks to IGN, and from the looks of it, the game is trying to capture that Breath Of The Wild-esque feeling. Sonic himself looks noticeably out of place in an extremely realistic world.
SEGA has also shown off the way that speed works in the game, the way that puzzles work in the game, and the role that platforming plays in this world.
It’s a marked departure from previous Sonic titles and seems to show that the team working on the game wants to push Sonic forward in new and interesting ways using this as a springboard.
It does however reveal certain gameplay elements from the title, such as the fact that you can now wall-run and that there are going to be grindable rails dotted around this mysterious new island.
What Do We Want To See In Sonic Frontiers?
Personally as a huge Sonic fan myself, I’ve found that the biggest issue with a lot of 3D Sonic is a lack of speed and control. The older 2D Sonic games always made you feel like you were in absolute control of the titular character, while still moving at a high speed.
Modern 3D Sonic takes away that control (and in some cases, the speed) in favor of setpieces that just don’t land. A Sonic game shouldn’t be focused on setpieces and story first, that should come after the gameplay is made into something resembling the older stuff. If Frontiers can manage this careful combination it has the potential to become one of the best 3D Sonic games ever made.
I suppose we’ll know for sure after people get their first hands-on over at Gamescom 2022, and with the new trailer that is currently scheduled to drop at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022.
