We’re not fans of how tedious it can be to find out whether a gaming rig is fit for this or that game. In that spirit, we are working on a utility to make the process significantly more straightforward. Once ready, the tool will automatically a PC and provide a detailed list of all the components. We’re still hard at work, but we’ll be sure to publish an update once it’s ready to go.

Will Overwatch 2 Be Free?

New York Midtown 01

The short answer is: Yes. Overwatch 2 will be free.

The long answer is still yes, but with a few caveats. Akin to similar games of this ilk such as Apex Legends and Fortnite, you’ll be able to purchase a battle pass for the game. This battle pass will allow you to unlock customization options and new characters along the way.

This has drawn several complaints from people who would rather have the entire game unlocked at the start and who believe that the battle pass should only serve to accentuate customization options, but Activision-Blizzard has already committed to making characters unlockable through this system, so it’s unlikely to change anytime soon.

Overwatch 2 Game Details

  • Release Date: TBA (Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch) – Check out the latest Overwatch 2 release date news
  • Beta Release Date: 26th April 2022
  • System Requirements: Medium
  • Genre: Multiplayer First-Person Shooter
  • Developer: Blizzard Entertainment
  • Publisher: Blizzard Entertainment

Announced at BlizzCon 2019, Overwatch 2 is the direct sequel to the massively popular multiplayer first-person shooter Overwatch. Borrowing heavily from what made the original a cult classic, developer Blizzard will offer a shared multiplayer environment between the sequel and the original. This shared pool will extend to maps, modes, and heroes, while progress in Overwatch will carry over to Overwatch 2.

The chief feature of Overwatch 2 is, however, a persistent PvE mode where players can take part in co-operative play, unlock new hero skills, and gain experience. The PvE mode will be broken down into a story mode weaving a rich narrative, and a tower device-like hero-specific variant.

More than a shared environment, the two titles share the same engine, although Overwatch 2 will use an updated iteration to cater for bigger maps and the new PvE facet of the game. As of writing, Overwatch 2 is set to usher in two new heroes, including a robot named Echo and Sojourn, an Overwatch officer.

Optimal Hardware Suggestions

Season 1 Battle Pass Tier 55 1

With the minimum system requirements, we predict a stable 30 FPS at 720p with the settings turned way down to low. Although, as with the original, there should be a generous helping of graphical options and sliders to tweak to find a setup that works for you.

As for the recommended requirements, these up the frame rate to 60 at 1080p with the settings set to high. We imagine the RAM count will be between 6 GB and 8 GB, and you’ll need at least a GTX 1660 for this type of performance.

As the game is still in the early stages of development and we don’t expect a release anytime soon, these suggestions remain purely speculative. As such, the final product may differ drastically, but this is unlikely given how much of the game is based on the original, which ran well with specifications well below those highlighted here.

What Gaming PC Do We Recommend?

If you want to plan ahead and have a machine ready to throw everything it can at Overwatch 2 once it releases, we recommend looking at either our $500 and $600 builds. Regardless of how the official system requirements turn out, both builds will put you in good stead for whatever Blizzard throws at us come release.

Can you play Overwatch 2 beta on console?

The early Overwatch 2 beta didn’t give console users access to the closed, unfortunately. However, that has all changed with the second roll out, with both Xbox and PlayStation users being able to sign-up for the beta. Simply head on over to the Xbox Overwatch 2 product page and select the platform you’d like to sign up for. It’s that simple.
